Benjamin J. Koval, 90, a lifelong Jersey City resident, recently of Kearny, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 13, 2013. He served in the Army during WWII, stationed in Germany. Benjamin was a Combat Engineer aboard the USS Susan B. Anthony on June 7, 1944 when it struck a mine and sank off the coast of Normandy. His battalion was en-route in support of the D-Day Invasion at Normandy. He was among 2, 689 people aboard who survived that day. Benjamin was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed the Yankees, Giants and Notre Dame football.
Loving son of the late Michael and Mary Kowal; beloved brother of Mary Carr, Arlene Smith, Dorothy Kowal, and the late Peter & Paul Koval, Frances Kowal, Ann Kowal, and Valerie Zgorzynski; cherished uncle of nieces Cheryl Smith, Linda Smith, Arlene Zgorzynski Perkowski, Gail Carr Topoleski and nephew William Smith. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM at STELLATO FUNERAL HOME, 425 RIDGE ROAD, LYNDHURST, NJ 07071. A Funeral Mass will follow at Queen of Peace Church, N. Arlington at 12 PM. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, N. Arlington.
