Hopf, Charles F., 91, of Lyndhurst, NJ on Thursday, July 26, 2012. Beloved husband of Gloria (nee Scott) Hopf. Loving father of Nancy & her husband the late James Villepique, Joyce & her husband Anthony Baratta & Kathleen Hopf. Dear brother of Doris Green & the late Albert Hopf. Cherished grandfather Deborah Villepigue, James Villepigue & Joseph Baratta. Adored great-grandfather of Sienna, Kaiya, Colton, Isabella & Giuliana. Mr. Hopf was born in Jersey City & lived there for several years before moving to Lyndhurst in 1947. He worked as an ironworker for Bergen Iron & Engineering of Carlstadt. He worked as a concrete laborer, as well as being an iron worker & foreman for Locals #45 & #399 Benevolent Assoc. of Iron Workers. Charles was involved for over 55 years with the structural steel fabricating of important buildings and structures in the metropolitan area such as the Lower Level of the GW Bridge and Margaret Hague Hospital in Jersey City. He also worked for 27 years on the machines and buildings of the ever growing Hoffman LaRoche Complex in Nutley. Mr. Hopf is a WWII veteran having served with the US Merchant Marines from 1942-1946. Charles was a member of the District Council of Iron Workers Welfare Fund of Northern NJ, BPOE #1505, past president & charter member of AARP #4319, AMVETS #20, American Merchant Marine Veterans Dennis A. Roland Chapter, the First Saturday Club of Our Lady of Fatima & the Knights of Columbus. He currently sits on the Lyndhurst Board of Health & has been a member of the Lyndhurst Fire Dept. for over 50 years. Charles is a former Chief of Engine Co. #1 and served as Deputy Fire Commissioner from 1988-1990. He is a past president of Valley Brook Fire Company and member of the Bergen County Fire Chiefs. Mr. Hopf is a life member of the Exempt Fireman's League & the Ex-Chiefs Over-The-Hill Gang. Charles served on many committees as well as past president of the Friendship Seniors. He was honored by Mayors Stellato, Gagliardi, Guida & Shuber and Senator Ambrosio as Senior Citizen Volunteer of the Year for many years. Charles managed "The Food Farm" food bank of Lyndhurst, the Sacred Heart Food Pantry and participated with the Sacred Heart & Interfellowship twice a year in their project to feed the homeless. Mr. Hopf ran the Democratic Headquarters each year, a county committeeman for the Democratic Party, served as a fundraiser, petitioning the construction of Sacred Heart School and was also responsible for petitioning the erection of the Senior Citizens Bldg. Funeral Monday at 9AM from the Ippolito-Stellato Funeral Home, 425 Ridge Road, Lyndhurst, NJ. Funeral Mass 10AM at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery.
