David Howard Smith, 87, resident of Fairfield, NJ for 57 years, on Saturday, November 24, 2007. Beloved husband of 62 years to Dorothy (nee Bolton) Smith. Loving father of Susan E. Powell of Long Valley NJ, Kathleen A. Smith of Lincoln Park, Gerald D. Smith of Bloomingdale & Carole J. Smith-Macrae of Saco ME and sons-in-law James Powell, Richard Bottoni & Douglas Macrae and daughter-in-law Judith Smith. Dear brother of Robert M. Smith, Marion Peterson, Eloise Anderson, Nancy Hierholzer & Mary Ellen Brown. Cherished grandfather of David and Daniel Powell, Katelyn and Elissa Macrae, Rebekah, Caroline, Peter and Benjamin Smith. Also survived by 34 nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Ella Mae (nee Skelton) and Benjamin H. Smith, sister Virginia Smith Firman and brother Benjamin Smith. David was a self-employed machinist. He owned and operated Bede Machine Shop in Fairfield for 20 years, retiring in 1985. He was a graduate of Bloomfield High School, class of 1939. He served in the US Army Air Force, 1941-1945, and was a Technical Sergeant in North Africa, Italy and Sicily during WW II. David was a member of the Fairfield Reformed Church where he served as Church Choir Director for more than 30 years. He was a member of the Fairfield VFW Post 7925. He also served on the Fairfield Board of Education. A celebration of David's life will be held at the Fairfield Reformed Church in Fairfield on Friday, December 7 at 11am. Visiting with the family and a light lunch will follow the service in Fellowship Hall. Cremation was private. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in David's name to the Fairfield Reformed Church, 360 Fairfield Road, Fairfield NJ 07004.
