Guterl, Edward J, of Lyndhurst, NJ, formerly of Jersey City, on Saturday, April 17, 2004. Beloved husband of the late Gladys (nee Lunney). Loving father of Edward (Woody), James and Alice Guterl. Dear brother of Esther Grant. Cherished grandfather of four. While still in high school he helped his father open Eddie's Market at 187 Monticello Avenue in Jersey City. This would be the last of eleven stores of which his grandfather's company, NY & NJ Beef Company, would open. By the end of the depression his father's and one other store were left. After losing his father to diabetes in 1954, he ran the business until 1980 when he could no longer tolerate the robberies, break-ins, and the overall deterioration of the neighborhood. At age 66 he joined his son's construction business where he was an active part of the business for twenty years. To anyone who knew him, they could always get a story about his four years spent in the First Armoured Division during WWII. From his training in Fort Knox to shipping out on the Queen Mary from NY, and sitting in a completely blacked out troop transport train for hours in the middle of the meadows. Here he told his army buddies, "I recognized that smell anywhere, if you get me to a door on this train I can get us all a home cooked meal before we ship out." Then on to attacking Rome from the South (by his account the 1st Armoured Division had a lot more to do with taking Rome than history gives them credit for). He was a member of the 1st Armoured Division Association since its inception in 1946. The 1st Armoured Division holds a reunion every year in a different city around the country. He would think nothing of getting in the old car and driving to places like San Antonio, TX. in the early years with three kids in the back seat. He received his forty year award for attending forty reunions in 1997 and has not missed since, most recent being in Jacksonville, FL. in August 2003. He was a past member and past deacon of the United Presbyterian Church of Lyndhurst since 1950. He was also a member of the Barringer-Walker-LoPinto Post #139 of American Legion since moving to Lyndhurst 54 years ago. Funeral Thursday 9AM from the Ippolito-Stellato Funeral Home, 425 Ridge Road, Lyndhurst. Funeral Service 10AM at the United Presbyterian Church of Lyndhurst. Interment in Crest Haven Memorial Park, Clifton. Friends will be received Tuesday 7-9PM and Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9PM.
