Elaine Carella Haggerty passed away in complete peace in her home and with her family on August 5th. She was a life-long resident of the township. Born in 1933, she was the daughter of Nicholas A. and Emily Carella. Her father was the first assistant prosecutor of Bergen County from 1934 through 1944. Her grandfather, John E. Guidetti, was among the founders of the township and served as township judge, commissioner, as well as on the board of education as the townships schools were built. Her husband, Paul B. Haggerty, passed away in 2018. He also served several terms on the board of education, as well as the board of commissioners.
Elaine attended Lyndhurst schools. In high school, she was the head cheerleader, editor of The Lighthouse, vice president of the student council and was Salutatorian of her class of 1951. After graduation, she went on to Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York, where she earned her degree in Psychology. Elaine became a schoolteacher, at first, while her husband was stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, where she taught the children of the Marines who were stationed there. She then, upon returning to Lyndhurst, taught at the Stony Lane School in Paramus. In 1960, she began teaching in Lyndhurst where she taught grade school in nearly every school in the township, as well as remedial reading, math, enrichment and teacher workshops. She retired in 1997. Elaine had a very large circle of close friends, many of whom were schoolteachers she had mentored early on, as well as former students. She was everyones rock, counsellor, motivator and listener. She was beloved by all who knew her.
In addition to countless cousins, Elaine is survived by her children, Maura, Paul, Brian, a daughter in law, Karen, her grandchildren, Paul, Nicholas and Kaley, great grandchildren Paul and Brielle. Also survived by her beloved cousins who were like siblings, Judy McCarthy and Frank DiChiara.
Family will receive visitors on Wednesday, August 10th from 4PM to 6PM. A Eulogy will be given in her honor at 6PM.
