George C. Kiriakopoulos

Dr. George C. Kiriakopoulos passed away on Saturday, October 21, 2017. Born in Derby, CT to Konstantine and Triatafilia Kiriakopoulos, he was raised in Brooklyn, NY.
He joined the United States Army as a ranger in 1944 and landed at Omaha Beach in Normandy, France helping to liberate Paris. As a Sargent Major, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was the 4th soldier to enter and liberate Buchenwald.
After the war, he stayed in Paris, receiving his Associate Degree from the Sorbonne in Art.
Upon his return from Europe, he entered Brooklyn College and proceeded to be accepted to Columbia University School of Dentistry. He had a private practice in dentistry in Fort Lee and was a professor of dentistry at Columbia Dental School as well as being on the Admissions Committee.
He was a member of the Church of the Ascension in Fairview and then a became a member of the Parish Council. Dr. Kiriakopoulos was the President of the Metropolitan Church of St. John the Theologian in Tenafly for three years.
He was bestowed the honor of Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
He is the author of several books on dentistry and World War II including Ten Days to Destiny, The Battle for Crete and the Nazi Occupation of Crete.
George is survived by his beloved wife Virginia (nee Demos) and his loving daughter Stephanie.
Funeral 10 AM Wednesday from Hunt-Stellato Funeral Home, 1601 Palisade Avenue, Ft. Lee. Funeral service 11 AM at the Metropolitan Cathedral of St John the Theologian, Tenafly, NJ.
Interment to follow George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus, NJ. Friends will be received Tuesday 4-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Metropolitan Cathedral of St. John the Theologian, 353 E. Clinton Avenue., Tenafly, NJ.
