Harold Heyler

Heyler, Harold, 89, of Lyndhurst and Toms River, NJ, on Wednesday, July 4, 1012. Mr. Heyler was born in Jersey City on Memorial Day, May 31st 1923, to father August Heyler and mother Regina Heyler. He resided in Jersey City through mid-teens, then Lyndhurst until 1997, and then Toms River, New Jersey. Mr. Heyler was a graduate of Lyndhurst High School class of 1941. He became a pilot, gaining his pilot's license after high school and enlisted in the United States Army after Pearl Harbor. He was dispatched overseans to the Pacific Theatre in May of 1942, proudly serving with the 6th Army in New Guinea, the Philippines and Australia. In 1944, General Douglas MacArthur planned for the invasion of the Philippines. On March 23, 1944, in New Guinea, a Navy aircraft made a rough landing in the gulf causing the hull to split, and destroying the important maps for MacArthur's pending invasion. MacArthur required precise maps of Leyte and the originals only existed for the 6th Army. Having great artistic talent, Harold volunteered to draw and sketch precise maps that MacArthur required. These were used by MaArthur and his staff in October of 1944 and are now part of the United States Presidential Library Collection. Upon his return to the US in late 1945, Mr. Heyler worked for Western Electric (later ATT Technologies) and retired in 1986. Harold was married on May 2nd, 1953 to Helen Ann Offer of Irvington at St. Leo's Church in Irvington, New Jersey. Mr. Heyler was an avid carpenter, making many beautiful pieces for friends, family and local markets. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Lyndhurst, the Lyndhurst Elks Club 1505, and the Lyndhurst CYO. Mr. Heyler is survived by 2 sons, Glenn of Coral Springs, Florida, and Gregory of North Arlington, New Jersey, a daughter Leslie Lindskog of Montville, New Jersey, and a sister, Carol Stouffer of Lancaster, PA. Mr. Heyler was a proud grandfather to 6 grandchildren, Andrea Heyler and Justin Heyler of North Arlington, Brandon Heyler of Coral Springs, Florida, and Rachel Lindskog, Stephanie Lindskog and Eric Lindskog of Montville. Funeral Monday at 9 AM from the Ippolito-Stellato Funeral Home, 7 Two Bridges Road, Fairfield, NJ. Funeral Mass 10 AM St. Pius X Church, Montville. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.
