Irene King Candio Mennitt

Irene King Candio Mennitt of Lyndhurst and Ship Bottom, New Jersey, passed away peacefully in her home on November 17th at the age of 95. Irene was a nurse, teacher, writer, World War II army veteran, associate of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Peace, and a member of the Bread and Justice Community. As an advocate for social justice, she wrote articles and actively participated in events furthering the cause. Without hesitation, Irene provided shelter to women and families who were in dire need. She was a mentor to the many who sought her wisdom and counsel. Above all, Irene was a peacemaker. Irene is survived by her children Stephen (and wife Beth), Margaret (Maggie, and husband Chris Sekel), and Frank (and wife Sue), and her daughter-in-law Jan. She was predeceased by her husbands Francis and Louis, and her children Victoria (Bunny) and Kevin. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Megan, Christopher, Caitlin, Kristen, Sam, Kenny, Julie, Stephen, Emily, Jenna, Ethan, and Grace, and great grandchildren, Kendall, Skylar, Cameron, and Alexander. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 PM on Tuesday, November 20th at Ippolito-Stellato Funeral Home, 425 Ridge Rd., Lyndhurst. Her life will be celebrated at a funeral mass at 10 AM on Wednesday, November 21st at Sacred Heart Church in Lyndhurst, followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetery. In honor of Irene, contributions can be made to the York Street Project in Jersey City.
