Irma Canabal

Irma Canabal passed away in Westwood, NJ in the early evening of Wednesday, October 17, 2018. Born on November 20, 1934 in Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico, she was one four daughters to Nicolas Sanchez and Lina Santiago.

After completing two years of business college in Puerto Rico she moved to New York and married the love of her life, Jacinto Canabal on July 9th, 1955. They raised a sole son, Raul, and remained together and in love for 55 years before his death in 2011. While caring for her family was her main priority, she also worked as a circuit board assembler at an electronics factory in Brooklyn. In her spare time, she enjoyed interior decorating, telenovelas, doing crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles and was a lifelong Mets fan.

Irma is predeceased by her sister Laura and survived by her beloved son, Raul Canabal. She is also survived by her sisters, Monse and Nany, as well as nieces, Linda Vega, Laurie Defendini and great-niece Nicole Gonzalez, who provided assistance with her care in recent years, in addition to several more nephews and nieces.

In keeping with her nature, an intimate service and burial for family members will be held on Thursday, October 25, 2018. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Irma's honor to either of these two organizations providing hurricane recovery support to her beloved island of Puerto Rico.
