James Gregory McIlroy

July 9, 1948 — June 3, 2024

Lyndhurst

James "Greg" McIlroy., 75, of Lyndhurst, New Jersey, passed away on Monday, June 3, 2024.   He was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and emigrated with his parents when he was two years old, to Kearny, NJ.  Beloved husband of Barbara Ann (nee Riecker) McIlroy.  They lived their entire married life in Lyndhurst where they raised their two children.  Loving father of Kerri & her husband Peter Czech and James "Jamie."  Cherished grandfather of Helena Rosanna and Jonas James Czech.  Dear brother of Deborah McIlroy & her husband Blake Rubin and Eileen & her husband Thomas McKeon.  Also survived by his in-laws Jeanette & William Mulligan, Patricia McCoy, Margaret (Peggy) Riecker, and Diane and Michael Riecker.  He was predeceased by his mother and father, Doris and Jim McIlroy, as well as his in-laws, Rosanna and William Riecker.   He is survived by many adoring nieces, nephews, and their children.

Jim-Greg, as he was fondly called by his fellow NJT commuters, worked for the U.S. Trust Company in NYC for 32 years.  He formed many close and lasting friendships with his train people.  He loved spending time with his grand babies, swimming (especially in the ocean), and The March Madness college basketball; he was MVP for basketball in Kearny High School.  As a proud parent and supporter of the LHS Band, he never missed a Band Trip.  It was hard to tell who was having more fun, us parents or the students.  He also loved to bike ride around the shore towns when visiting family there.  His sense of humor was unique, subtle, and timeless; and he always had a quick remark that made everyone laugh.   His infamous “bird imitation” and musical recital of “playing his leg” were legendary and sure to bring a smile at every gathering.  His sunny personality and quick wit will be missed by all his friends and family.

Memorial Service Sunday 1-5 PM at the Ippolito-Stellato Funeral Home, 425 Ridge Road, Lyndhurst.
