Joann Sweeney (nee Slaby), loving wife, devoted mother, doting grandmother, and cherished sister, passed away peacefully on December 6th, 2024, at the age of 72 in Hackensack, NJ. Born on November 25th, 1952, in Shamokin, PA, Joann's zest for life and her unwavering spirit left an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing her. 

Joann's journey through life was one characterized by love and service. She shared 49 beautiful years with her husband, Michael Sweeney, a testament to their enduring love and partnership. Together, they raised a family of four children who became the center of Joann's world: her daughters, Kelly Reynolds and her husband Kevin, Eileen Ferry and her husband Tom, Shannon Lynch and her husband Bryan, and her son, Michael Sweeney Jr. and his wife Heather. She was a beacon of light in her family, instilling values of kindness and compassion that will live on through her seven grandchildren: Eryn, Christina, Jolene, John, Michael III, John "JJ," and Benjamin.Joann also leaves behind her older sister, Barbara Gefri and her family. She is also predeceased by her beloved parents, Joseph and Lorraine Slaby.

Before she was married, Joann worked at Kearny Federal Savings Bank as a clerk in the mortgage department until she was able to pursue her dream job, being a mother. In her pursuit of personal growth and contributing to her family's well-being, Joann returned to education after starting her family. She earned an Associate's Degree from Bergen Community College, an achievement that spoke volumes about her dedication and resilience. Joann worked proudly as a Program and Resident Camp Director for The Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey where she impacted the lives of many young girls, instilling in them the values of courage, confidence, and character. Her leadership and creativity left a lasting mark on the organization.

Joann's commitment to her community was evident through her extensive involvement in various associations. Her leadership qualities shone as she held past positions such as PTA President, Women's Club President, and President of the Rosary Altar Society. At the time of her passing, she was an active member of the Rosary Altar Society and served as their Treasurer. She was also a member of the Prayer Warriors and served as a Eucharistic Minister and Altar Server at her beloved Church of the Assumption of Our Blessed Lady in Wood-Ridge.

The outdoors brought Joann immeasurable joy, as she cherished camping and spending time in nature with her family and friends. Her vibrant spirit was most alive when she was volunteering, engaging in arts & crafts, and simply laughing and having a good time. Joann's love for her church family was profound, and her faith was a constant source of comfort and guidance.

Those who knew Joann will remember her as the epitome of loving, selfless, and generous. Her ability to put others before herself, paired with her unwavering support for her loved ones, defined her as a truly remarkable individual. 

Joann's legacy is one of boundless love and enduring kindness. Her infectious laughter and the warmth of her presence will be deeply missed by all those whose lives she touched. As we bid farewell to Joann Sweeney, we celebrate the extraordinary life she led and the countless hearts she warmed. She will forever remain in our hearts as a guiding light and a symbol of unconditional love.
