Maria Zaida Antunes

Antunes, Maria Zaida (nee dos Santos), 91, of West Orange, New Jersey, passed away on Tuesday, January 3, 2023. Beloved wife of the late Jose Maria Antunes. Loving mother of Helder Antunes, Eurico Antunes and daughters-in-law Anabela Antunes and Elizabete Antunes. Dear sister of Custodio Gregorio dos Santos and sister-in-law Maria do Carmo Santos. Cherished grandmother of Michelle & her husband Bryan Ferreira, Cynthia & her husband Ricky Hajduk and Nicole Antunes & her finac&egravee Thomas Brennan. Adored great-grandmother of Juliana Hajduk. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Mrs. Antunes was born in Torres Vedras, Portugal and immigrated to the United States in 1972. She resided in Newark until 1981 when the family then moved to West Orange. In West Orange , she was a devout parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes where she attended mass daily. She lived a humble and simple life. Maria Zaida was a hard worker, who also wholeheartedly and unselfishly gave of herself to others, especially her family. During her free time she loved crossword puzzles, praying the rosary, and listening to Mother Angelica on the Catholic channel. She also loved recalling and retelling stories of "olden times". You could find her doing morning and afternoon laps with her late husband around Colgate Park in West Orange during her retired years. Funeral Friday 9AM from the Ippolito-Stellato Funeral Home, 425 Ridge Road, Lyndhurst. Funeral Mass 10AM Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church. Entombment Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum. Friends will be received Thursday from 4PM-7PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the BrightFocus Foundation, 22512 Gateway Center Drive, Clarksburg MD 20871 to support Alzheimer's research.
