Fitzpatrick, Matthew T., passed away at the age of 79 in the company of his family the morning of March 18, 2016 to the music of Frank Sinatra who also grew up in Hoboken, NJ. He was a long time resident of New Providence, NJ. Matt was born November 30th, 1936 in New York. He is the son of Patrick and Theresa Fitzpatrick and was the youngest in his family. He had two brother's John Fitzpatrick and Peter Fitzpatrick. Matt has survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Matt was known for his quick-witted yet humorous Irish disposition toward life. Friends and family claimed to have never heard Matt tell the same joke twice. A little known fact about Matt is that he was a personal friend of the late and famous comedian George Carlin. Along with his brother's John and Peter, Matt attended St. Peters Preparatory School in Jersey City, NJ. Matt would later attend college at Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ. During his time at Seton Hall, Matt completed an ROTC program enabling him to become an officer in the army after college. Matt was stationed as a first lieutenant in Post WWII Germany. While in the military, Matt gained the reputation for being a skilled operator of military vehicles such as jeeps and armored personal carriers. Matt's passion for vehicles lingered after his military service was over and owned several unique vehicles throughout his lifetime. Matt had a very successful career on Wall Street as a compliance office and worked for the New York Stock Exchange. He was fortunate enough to have an office on one of the upper floors of the original World Trade Center. One of Matthew's great accomplishments was helping young people with the creation of the Folk Mass at Our Lady of Peace in New Providence, NJ. The Folk Mass featured a variety of musicians that younger generation could appreciate. Matthew was also very involved in the Providence Big Brother program and was very generous and helped several disadvantage youths attend and complete a college education. Funeral Wednesday at 8AM from the Ippolito-Stellato Funeral Home, 425 Ridge Road, Lyndhurst, NJ. Funeral Mass 10AM Our Lady of Peace Church in New Providence. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends will be received Tuesday 4-8PM. In lieu of flowers his family and friends would suggest donations to Our Lady of Peace or Providence Big Brothers foundations.
