Prem Rijumal Sadhwani was born on June 26, 1936 in Hyderabad in the Sindh province of Pakistan (then India). He was the fourth of six children of Rijumal and Gopibai.
In 1947 after the partition the family left Hyderabad for India. Leaving behind everything they had and owned, they struggled to build a new life in a new land. The family had also lost their father a year before to tuberculosis. Gopibai along with four of the children went with her sister and her family to Jaipur. Prem, then 11 years old, and his oldest sister Sataan travelled to Jodhpur with Gopibais brother and his family.
In 1955 he went to Shillong to join his brother in laws business. He lived in Shillong till 1977 and spoke fondly of his time there. He was known as the unofficial mayor of Shillong and loved by all.
In 1968 he married Jyoti (nee Laju Mirwani) and in 1971 they had their first child, Gouri followed by the birth of Deepa in 1972 and Dinesh in 1975.
In 1977, he migrated again but this time to the U.S. and once again had to build a new life in another new country. He worked harder than most, and despite little formal education - was more intelligent than most and had an enduring grace about him which everyone admired.
His ability to connect with people was remarkable and genuine. His empathy for others was matched only by his willingness to help and his generosity towards them. He helped so many people in big and small ways.
His intelligence and curiosity spanned from films to politics and he was exceptionally versed in world affairs. He believed in the power of education and insisted all three of his children were well educated. He was always the happiest when he was with his children and grandchildren.
He exemplified love, kindness, generosity and selflessness throughout his life and was an extraordinary husband, father, and grandfather. Through his example, he taught his children and grandchildren to always be intellectually curious, care for others, help those in need, love with abundance and laugh with joy. His laugh was contagious and often full of mischief.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Jyoti, whom he absolutely adored, his three children Gouri, Deepa and Dinesh and their partners Paul, John and Sara and eight grandchildren Maya, Drew, Zoe, Anya, Nayan, Asha, Devin and Ayla.
He died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family. May his memory be a blessing.
