Maldjian, Vartavar Bedros 101, passed away on Monday November 23, 2015. He is survived by his beloved wife, Milia and his four children and eleven grandchildren: Dr. Pierre Maldjian and his wife Sarita and their children Samantha, Bedros, and Mihran; Dr. Joseph Maldjian and his wife Marianna and their children Joseph, Ani, Andre, and Raphael; Mariam Navarro and her husband Joseph and their children Amelia Navarro and Maria Bailey and her husband Jay; and Dr. Catherine Maldjian Adam and her husband Richard and their children Richard and Natalie. He is also survived by a sister, Rosemarie Akian, and brother, Francois Maljian.
Vartavar, an international artist, was born on July 12, 1914 in Cilicia, now a province of Turkey. He is the son of Bedros and Mariam (Zoulalian) Maldjian. He grew up in Alleppo, Syria and was educated at the School of Jesuit Fathers, Maristes Brothers College and the School of Art in Paris. He emigrated with his wife to the United States in 1961.
Vartavar learned the technique of weaving oriental carpets from his mother and took it to unparralled heights as exemplified in his 10 tapestries, including international award winning works. Vartavar also was an award-winning oil painter with over 100 original paintings and an author of numerous manuscripts concerning his art. He was a man of intense faith and dedication, a loving and beloved husband and father and he will be missed by all. Funeral Monday 9AM from the Ippolito-Stellato Funeral Home, 7 Two Bridges Road, Fairfield. Funeral Mass 10AM Sacred Heart Armenian Catholic Church, Little Falls. Interment to follow Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. Friends will be received Sunday 4-8PM.
