Violet Pauline [Goerner] Ward, of North Bergen and formerly of Fort Lee, died Saturday, July 30. She was 92. Mrs. Ward was born August 25, 1918 to K. Emil and Pauline Goerner in Woodridge, New Jersey. She grew up in Woodridge and attended Hasbrouck Heights High School. Before her marriage, she worked for American Viscos, located in the Empire State Building in New York City. She was often recruited as a hand model by a cosmetics company in the same building. She married George Bert Ward on June 6, 1943 in Teaneck, New Jersey. After their marriage, the couple lived in Fort Lee. Mr. Ward died in 2002. Mrs. Ward studied classical voice for many years in New Jersey and in New York City. She was a mezzo-soprano. She gave several concerts in the northern New Jersey area. She was an accomplished artist, working in oils, pastels, and graphite. She was also a talented seamstress and dress designer. One of Mrs. Ward's most important interests was her extended family. She was the youngest child of the youngest son of a German immigrant couple who settled in the Jersey City area and produced 11 children. Mrs. Ward was one of 23 first cousins. She regularly kept in touch with them and their children. She is survived by a son, Robert, of Leonia, NJ; a daughter, Susan Ward, and a son-in-law, Dr. David Hornung, of Canton, NY; a sister-in-law, DesAnges Lyons Nazzaro, of Toms River, NJ; and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent in Mrs. Ward's name to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital at PO Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN, 38148-0142 A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
